The Courage of Anisha Devi: Overcoming Stigma and Building Hope

Anisha Devi, a 25-year-old woman from Balia district, has endured a lifetime of pain and hardship that began when she was diagnosed with leprosy at just 12 years old. Her family, bound by deep-rooted gender biases, denied her the chance to pursue an education, leaving her dependent and without the skills needed for independence. As the disease went untreated, Anisha developed visible disabilities in her hands, which only intensified the cruelty and exclusion she faced from her own family and community. Instead of receiving care, she was treated as a burden, her needs and dreams dismissed. When she finally received government aid meant to help her survive, her family forced her to hand over the money, stripping her of even the smallest hope for financial security. The pain of social rejection followed her into adulthood, as marriage proposals disappeared and her parents ultimately arranged her marriage to an unemployed, visually impaired man, leaving her with no say in her own future. Even when Anisha tried to build a better life by learning to sew at Ayodhya’s Leprosy Mission, bureaucratic obstacles and missing documents prevented her from accessing the support she needed to move forward. Anisha’s life is a story of relentless struggle against discrimination, exploitation, and isolation, her pain made worse by a system and society that failed to protect her dignity or offer her a real chance at hope.
